This website is first and foremost just a place where I can display some photos, which I think are worth their own place in cyber space. Having once gone down the digital road with an expensive DSLR I soon became disillusioned with the lack of depth or soul in the results. Pressing the shutter, meant nothing, the results looked efficient but ordinary. Everything was flat, boring and predictable. Digital photography was just too convenient. And then I discovered the world of toy cameras, plastic and cheap but full of intrigue and fun. Mistakes and light-leaks are embraced, celebrated even and all the old rules of conventional photography are discarded. There were so many new ideas to try out within the wonderful world of film. Cross-processing, Polaroid transfers, infra red, overlapping negatives, flipped lens, double exposures, running 35mm film through 120 cameras, redscale, wide-angle, pinhole, negative scanning etc etc. I have plenty more to try and learn. The camera I use the most is the Holga, which uses 120 films. With it’s light leaks and dreamy, blurry edges it became very popular in the States during the 70s with students who could not afford the more sophisticated medium format equipment. Its popularity has grown and many professionals now carry a Holga in their equipment bag. It only weighs a couple of ounces and the contrast with a bulky brash DSLR speaks volumes in comparing the two methods. Other cameras used to take the shots in this gallery are various Dianas, a Lubitel 166B, a Horizon 202, a LCA+, several polaroids including a daylab, an old Brownie Hawkeye Flash with the lens “flipped” and an Agfa Clack to name just a few. Should anyone want to know more or wish to purchase a photo than please get in touch I have an account on flickr too, with nearly 2000 pictures on it – take a look |
